Merchants continue hot start

Lebanon — The Lebanon Merchants continued their impressive start to the 2013 season this weekend, sweeping two double headers.

The Merchants topped the Bedford Stars in two games Saturday, before taking two from the Indy Bandits Sunday. The four wins pushed the Merchants record to 6-0.

“It is just a good start, we aren’t used to being 6-0,” Lebanon manager Ron Ebert said. “The guys are having fun and they know how we started last year. They are a year older and playing together.”

Lebanon graduate Michael Spolyar threw a complete game in game one Sunday to get the win.

In game two, Jason Wuerfel threw a complete game shutout.

Those two strong pitching performances came on the heels of two other strong performances Saturday. Lebanon grad Travis Herrin threw a complete game shutout in one game, while Colton Stevenson and Matt Bowman combined for the win in the other.

“We are backed up with double headers on the weekend,” Ebert said. “Back-to-back double headers are hard on pitching. We got some complete games so that was a blessing. The up coming weekends we are going to have to load up on pitching.”

Game two Sunday featured a little bit of everything.

The Merchants scored three runs on just one hit in the first inning then scored four more in the second on an error, a ground out and a single by Tyler Owensby.

Later in the game, a dog ran out on the field and delayed play for five minutes. Then, in the top of the sixth, the Merchants recorded a triple play to end the inning. Spolyar caught a liner at second, threw to first for the second out, then Ty Foster threw to second to get the third runner.
