Stars looking to improve last year's record

Dover — The Western Boone boys soccer team lost their leading scorer and their goalkeeper, but returned a vast majority of a team that advanced to the sectional final last season. With a year of experience under most of their belts, the Stars will look to improve on a 5-11-1 season from a year ago. "The thing that has impressed me the most is their work ethic," Western Boone head coach Mike Schlemmer said. "They are dedicated to making this a successful season. We have a lot of seniors on this team and I think they want to make this a memorable year." The Stars will have seven seniors on the roster this season. Schlemmer said that will be extremely important for the team. "It is really good," Schlemmer said. "They are extra coaches on the field. Soccer is different than a lot of sports — you can't call timeout on the field, the field is large, there is no change between offense and defense, so it is critical to have leaders on the field to get the message across." Schlemmer said that heading into the season, the expectations for the team aren't based on wins and losses or championships, but rather how the team carries itself on and off the field.
