Tigers put away Hot Dogs with late-inning offense

Crawfordsville — Offense was at a premium Wednesday night when Lebanon and Frankfort met in the baseball sectional quarterfinals at North Montgomery.

In the end, it was the Tigers who showed their strength at the plate, topping Frankfort 7-1 to advance to the sectional semifinals Monday morning.

“Early on in the game we did a good job of executing our situational hitting, bunting and things we work on a lot in practice,” Lebanon head coach Rick Cosgray said. “When you are going against a good pitcher like (Leo) Lopez, you have to do the little things well. We did that early until we could figure him out a little bit.”

Frankfort struck first in the bottom of the first inning. After Jordan Ham reached on an error, he was sacrificed to second and advanced to third on an error.

With one away Hector Lopez lined a shot to the right-center field gap, but Nick Starkey made a great diving catch to prevent an extra base hit.

The Tigers made three errors in the first 1 1/3 innings, but settled down after that.

“Travis Herrin pitched very well,” Cosgray said. “He got himself into some jams and we got ourselves into jams as a team with errors. He kept his composure, found himself and made some really good pitches to get out of the jams. I think a lot of it was nerves early in the game, and once we got settled down we started making the routine plays like we have all year.”

Lebanon tied the game back up in the top of the second. Herrin was hit by a pitch, and Brantley Fortner followed with a walk.

After Jackson Bennett sacrificed both over, Nathan Kincaid hit an RBI-ground out to score Herrin.
