---- — Zionsville junior Kyle DeCoursey made history Saturday, March 1, at the IHSAA Boys State Swimming Finals at the IUPUI Natatorium.
DeCoursey became the first male state champion in Zionsville swimming history, winning the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 20.59.
"It is amazing," DeCoursey said after the meet. "I can't even describe it. It is something that everyone dreams of."
DeCoursey said that in the back of his head, he knew Zionsville had never had a state champion before on the boys side. Now that he is the first, he said that it was "pretty cool."
DeCoursey had the top-time in Friday's prelims at 20.65.
Saturday in the finals, DeCoursey was third at the 25-yard turn, trailing Timothy Martin of Jeffersonville and Mate Kovacs of Penn. But after a strong turn, DeCoursey surged over the final 25, out-touching Kovacs by .06 seconds and Martin by .16.
