Stars end Tigers' streak, 58-52

The Western Boone Lady Stars had been close in recent years to beating their biggest rival, but hadn't beaten Lebanon since December of 2009.

Friday night, the Stars finally got their win. BayLee Mitchell hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:23 remaining and the Stars remained unbeaten with a 58-52 win, ending Lebanon's 31-game winning streak against Sagamore Conference opponents.

"It feels really good to finally get that win," Western Boone head coach Rich Schelsky said. "I am really proud of our kids and our seniors, they really stepped up in crunch times and made some big plays. BayLee Mitchell hit a big shot and we just did enough to win. I think it was like a normal rivalry game. I don't think either team played nearly their best, but somebody has to win those games and to our kids credit they gutted it out. It is a really big win."

Lebanon head coach Beth DeVinney agreed that the Stars' seniors made the difference in the final minutes of the game.

"Their experience was the difference," DeVinney said. "They have a lot of seniors and our kids are young. But we are gritty and we fight. But it was their experience that won the game. The good news for us is we aren't in mid-season form yet. This is game number eight. We are going to keep getting better and that is exciting for me. We don't have any thing to hang our heads about, what a great game on a Friday night in Indiana to play. Western Boone played extremely hard like they always do and were able to pull it out with some great senior leadership."

Western Boone led by seven entering the fourth quarter, but Lebanon scored the first seven points of the final frame, tying the game at 44 with 4:12 left on a put-back by Peyton Terrill.
