---- — Western Boone’s girls basketball team jumped out to an early lead against North Montgomery last night and never looked back, claiming a 51-29 win over the Chargers.

Webo’s BayLee Mitchell found her groove in the first quarter, and it looked as if there was no stopping the Stars, leading by a score of 14-4 at the end of the first period.

The scoring slowed a bit in the second quarter as the Chargers were able to settle in and slow down Western Boone’s offense.

Losers of three straight, Stars coach Rich Schelsky commented on his team’s tough stretch of games.

“We play a tough non-conference schedule, and our conference foes always know us well,” he said. “Ken (North Montgomery coach Hampton) always does a nice job, and they were able to throw us off of our game a bit.”

North’s defense was stagnant at times, but the Stars were fantastic throughout the game, holding the Chargers to just 13 made field goals on 37 attempts.

Western Boone outscored North Montgomery 19-9 in the third period, which helped build a 24-point lead.

The Chargers only attempted four shots from the charity stripe compared to the Stars’ 18 attempts. That statistic alone hurt the Chargers when it came to keeping the game close in the second half.
