Tigers place fifth at Team State

The Lebanon wrestling team didn't reach their ultimate goal Saturday at the Team State Duals.

But they showed they are heading in the right direction. After losing to eventual champion Yorktown in the opening round, Lebanon defeated Western and Twin Lakes to place fifth at Team State.

"The last two matches were positive reinforcement for our guys that we are doing it the right way and heading in the right direction," Lebanon head coach Derek Bocock said. "I don't think we wrestled our best on Saturday, but to beat two really good teams to end the day and not wrestle our best — that is encouraging and something we can build off of."

Lebanon fell down 27-0 against Yorktown before Kellen VanCamp's victory at 145 pounds made it 27-3.

Yorktown just continued to surge throughout the match, however, going up 54-3.

Michael Smith (220 pounds) and Cody Bauer (285) won the final two matches to make the score 54-9 at the end.

"It takes an entire team to build momentum and we were lacking that," Bocock said. "It effects the team and program when you don't have everyone available to wrestle. But it takes a collective effort to get momentum and we just couldn't get any going."

The Tigers bounced back in beating Western 45-28 and then Twin Lakes 42-27.
