Western Boone outlasts Chargers in overtime thriller

Dover — Now that the season is entering its homestretch, hard-fought high school basketball games are expected to be commonplace.

That was the case last night in a Sagamore Athletic Conference showdown between North Montgomery (2-13, 1-4 SAC) and Western Boone (6-9, 2-4 SAC).

The Chargers went on the road and led throughout much of the game.

That was until the Stars amassed a comeback to send the game into overtime.

Western Boone took the game in the extra period, 55-48.

“This was a much needed win for us,” Western Boone coach Scott McClelland said after the game. “I know those guys have struggled this year, but I’m not going to give this one back.”

North entered Boone County with a 2-12 record, losers of six-straight.

Western Boone has had struggles as well, entering the contest 5-9.

The Stars beat North Montgomery just three weeks ago in the Sugar Creek Classic by 11 points.

Western Boone jumped out to a 6-0 lead early in the first quarter, but the Chargers fought back.

North Montgomery’s Grant Gayler caught fire in the first half.

He stepped up while the Stars focused their defense on Charger Nathan Rogers.

Gayler rose above everyone who tried to guard him and had 12 points in the first half, leading all scorers.

The Stars were also outrun by North Montgomery.

Usually running a methodical offense, the Chargers flew up and down the court off of Western Boone’s missed shots.

Rogers was able to find his offense through these fast breaks.
