Herrin pitches, hits Tigers past Stars

Lebanon —  Lebanon senior Travis Herrin missed a lot of time last season after recovering from arm surgery.

Tuesday night he showed how effective he can be when he is healthy. Herrin pitched six innings and struck out 12 batters on the mound and had three RBIs at the plate in helping the Tigers to a 4-3 win against Western Boone.

“Travis has worked hard in the off-season,” Lebanon head coach Rick Cosgray said. “He played a lot of ball in the summer and he came into the season with a lot of confidence. He improved his stick tremendously and to step up and hit that home run early relaxed us a bit. It was great. For his first outing, to compete the way he did was a great performance.”

The Tigers are now 2-1 on the season, while Western Boone falls to 1-2.

Stars’ coach Dave Sloan said he was proud of the way his team competed.

“They fought every pitch the whole game and that is all you can ask,” Sloan said of his team. “We came back as a unit and practiced once and this is really our first game together. I am very proud of them. I think people who saw us last year compared to this year are going to see a completely different team.”

Pitching was the story early, as both Herrin and Western Boone starter Tyler Squibb were nearly flawless for the first three innings — combining to allow just two hits while striking out 10.

But things open up in the middle innings.
