WeBo ends Lebanon’s streak

Lebanon — Entering Tuesday night’s softball contest between Lebanon and Western Boone, the Tigers had not lost to a Sagamore Conference foe since Southmont defeated them in the 2009 sectional (50 games).

With one big fifth-inning, the Stars changed that. Western Boone scored seven runs in the fifth to grab the lead and topped Lebanon 14-8 to move to 3-0 and 1-0 in the conference.

“I am just so proud of our girls,” Western Boone head coach Mike Vanderpool said. “With the injuries we have, with our two pitchers out, I just tell the girls keep throwing strikes because we have a defense behind you that can do anything. And our outfield made some amazing plays tonight. Lydia (Climer) did a good job pitching and the girls made the plays behind her.”

The Tigers, tied for third in Class 3A in the most recent poll, fell to 2-1 and 0-1 on the season.

Head coach said that his girls were aware of the streak and that may have had a factor in the loss.

“I’m using that as an excuse, but we got beat tonight, there is no question,” Smith said. “Western Boone beat us. It is inevitable. We had a good streak and you are able to keep things going and some day somebody is going to get you. We got it today and the thing we have to focus on now is stopping it. We have to get ourselves back to being able to compete with anybody and have a positive game.”

Lebanon jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Carly Greene hit a 2-run home run and Madelyn Smith hit an RBI-single.

Western Boone came back with a run in the second on an RBI by Lauren Wilson, then took the lead with a three-run third.
