Athenians beat Stars to win sectional

The Western Boone boys basketball fell just short in their quest to win the sectional championship Saturday night.

The Stars shot 34.6 percent (9 of 26) in the second half and fell to Crawfordsville 58-53 in the Sectional 25 championship game at Frankfort.

"I am proud of our kids, I really am," Western Boone head coach Scott McClelland said. "We battled, we had a good game plan, the kids did everything we asked and they fought, scrapped, kicked, clawed on defense. You saw the true character of this team. They could have packed it in and we got in back down to a one-possession game. Did we make some mistakes? Sure. But they did everything we asked and that is all you can ask for as a coach."

Western Boone got off to a great start in the game, leading 10-4 with 3:36 left in the first quarter. Crawfordsville eventually cut the Stars' lead to 12-11 at the end of a quarter.

The Athenians came back to tie the game at 21, then went on a 10-3 run to take a 31-24 lead with 3:00 to play in the half. The Stars scored the final six points of the half to stay close, and trailed by just one at the half.

Both teams struggled from the field in the third quarter, with Western Boone shooting 2-of-9 from the field and Crawfordsville shooting 2-of-10. The Athenians out-scored the Stars 6-4 in the frame and led 37-34 heading to the fourth quarter.

The Stars' Logan Wethington started the fourth quarter with a basket to cut the lead to one, but Crawfordsville's Connor Smith hit a 3-pointer to push the lead back to four. After a basket by Crawfordsville made the score 42-36, Kaleb McCloskey hit the Stars first 3-pointer of the game to cut the lead to three, but Smith again came up big with a 3-pointer on the Athenians' next possession to put Crawfordsville up six.
