Eagles hang on for 5-4 win

After seeing a four-goal lead nearly disappear, the Zionsville boys lacrosse team needed a big defensive stop if they wanted to improve to 3-0 on the season.

They got just that, with goalie Ben Gould making a save in the final seconds to preserve a 5-4 win against Libertyville (Ill.).

"The defense played very well there," Zionsville head coach Matt Garvey said. "They really played well all night. A 5-4 final is kind of unusual in high school lacrosse because it is so low-scoring. On that last possession they played great. (Libertyville) got a couple of shots off, but they weren't high percentage shots. That is something we will give them."

After a 0-0 first quarter, Zionsville grabbed control of the game in the second quarter.

The Eagles scored four goals — getting two from Cameron Bender and one each from Matt Welch and Luke Whitaker — to take a 4-0 lead into the halftime break.

"Those were all transition goals," Garvey said. "Our guys kept their heads up and they were moving around the field and finishing. They were able to put some of them in against an All-American goalie, he is really good."

Libertyville got on the board with 4:13 left in the third quarter with a goal from Nick Bagatti, but that was the only scoring in the third stanza.
