Eagles falter in their season opener

It wasn't the season opener the Zionsville softball team was looking for.

Battling a light rain and windy conditions, the Eagles gave up five runs in the bottom of the first inning and ultimately lost 11-1 in five innings to Hamilton Heights.

"After the girls got the rust off in the first inning, I think things tightened up a lot," Zionsville head coach Lori Esparza said. "We learned a lot about what our younger kids can do. The good news is every issue we had today was a communication/vocal situation that is easily fixed."

Zionsville put two runners on with two outs in the top of the first inning, but failed to score.

Then things started going south. Three of the first four batters from Hamilton Heights hit pop ups in the infield that landed in between two Eagle defenders.

Paired with another single, two walks and an error, the Huskies sent nine batters to the plate and scored five runs.

"Part of it was that we haven't had a lot of time outside to work on the communication of those pop ups," Esparza said. "But I think the bigger issue is that only three kids on the field played on varsity last year. None of the other kids had any experience on the varsity field and they were just new."

After a scoreless second inning, the Eagles got a leadoff single from Keli MacDonald in the third inning, but could not advance the runner.
