Stars ready to face Huskies

Dover — The Western Boone Stars have made it to the final 16 of Class 3A, and will look for their first sectional championship since 2001 Friday when they travel to Hamilton Heights.

Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Arcadia.

“We have had a really good week of preparation and the kids have worked really hard,” Western Boone head coach Jed Richman said Wednesday after practice. “We are looking forward to a good opportunity to win the sectional championship.”

The Stars are playing in their second sectional title game in three years, having lost to Bishop Chatard 41-14 in 2010.

But that game is not something the Stars have talked about as they get ready for this game, Richman said.

“We focus on the now and improving this week and trying to keep this thing alive,” Richman said. “More than two years ago, it has been since 2001 since we won a sectional and have never won one in 3A. We look at this as an opportunity to build on our tradition and for these seniors to continue to leave their legacy. A couple of years ago, I don’t know if we were really ready for a team like Chatard. That was a different situation and we haven’t talked about it. We have played in big games the last couple of years and our preparation doesn’t vary at all from those.”

Friday’s game is one of two sectional championships in Class 3A that will feature two top-10 teams. Hamilton Heights finished the season ranked No. 4 in both polls, while Western Boone was sixth in the AP Poll and fifth in the Coaches Poll.

In the computers, Hamilton Heights is second in Class 3A and 22nd overall. Western Boone is seventh and 69th.

Western Boone comes in scoring 26.7 points a game and allowing 12.5 — 29th best in the state and ninth in 3A.

The Huskies average 44.7 points a contest (eighth in the state and second in the class) and allow 8.2 (sixth in the state and fifth in the class).
