Tigers see hard work pay off with invite to team state

The Lebanon wrestling team has seen its hard work the past couple of years earn them a berth in the best team tournament this winter — the team state competition. Although the IHSAA cancelled the team state tournament of the postseason, the wrestling coaches across the state created the three-class team state tournament, which will be held in December at Westfield High School. Using results from the previous season and other factors like strength of schedule, eight teams from each of three classes were asked to participate in the tournament. Lebanon was one of the eight in the middle division, which will also feature the likes of Sagamore Conference schools Danville and North Montgomery. "Being invited says a lot about our program," Lebanon head coach Derek Bocock said. "First and foremost that we qualified for it based on where we are and what they are looking for. I think it says we are moving in the right direction. We still have a lot of work to do, and a lot we want to work on, but moving in right direction.” Bocock has been the coach the past six seasons at Lebanon. During that time, Lebanon has had five different wrestlers advance to state — including Collin Campbell and Caleb Bocock last year. Coach Bocock said that those individuals have helped pave the way for current and future Tigers, but wanted to emphasize the the team was the most important. “It is always nice to take kids to state and always something for our kids to look forward to in the future," Bocock said. "The young kids coming in — standard to set see what they can accomplish. As the years continue you see those exceptional kids get to that level, it is very encouraging. "But we always talk about team first, it has always been that way. We have had some struggled because of that but that is something that will never go away. For us to be part of team state, it helps identify what we strive to do." For more of this story, read Thursday's Lebanon Reporter.
