Stars score early and often vs. Vikings

Things could not have started any better for the Western Boone football team in their sectional opener against West Vigo Friday night. Riggs Baxter took the opening kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown, and the Stars' defense forced turnovers on two of the Vikings' first three plays. That all helped the Stars jump out to a 21-0 lead and Western Boone cruised from there in a 40-22 win. "Half the teams in the state of Indiana are done playing football right now, and we aren't one of those so we are thankful for that," Western Boone head coach Justin Pelley said. "The kids played hard, which is what we expected. We played a lot of our young guys in the second half because they deserve to play too. We are thin; with the injuries we have had this year, we weren't going to take any chances." After Baxter's return put Western Boone up 7-0 just 15 seconds into the game, Logan Marsh recovered a fumble on the Vikings' first play of the game to give the Stars the ball on the West Vigo 40. Six plays later, Nathanial Bye ran it in from five yards out to make the score 14-0. The Vikings fumbled on the second play of the ensuing drive, with Western Boone's Colton DeBard recovering the ball. This time it took seven plays for the Stars to score, with Bye scampering in from 18 yards out. Pelley said it was important to get off to a quick start in the game.
