Lady Eagles earn school's first berth at state meet

The goal for the Zionsville girls cross country team was simple, yet challenging all season long — earn the school's first trip to the state finals at Terre Haute. That goal was accomplished at Carmel's Northview Christian Church Saturday morning, as the Eagles placed fourth to earn the school's first berth at the IHSAA State Finals next weekend. "This is just awesome," said first-year head coach Suzanne Rigg. "I was just saying how I feel like I am starting at the top my first year and don't know where we can go from here. These girls have done such a great job. This is history for Zionsville — and the girls have said all year that they are doing this for all the teams in the past that haven't been able to get there." The Eagles scored 133 points. Carmel was first with 52 points, followed by Hamilton Southeastern (61 points) and Avon (110). Also advancing were Franklin Central and Westfield. All season long, the Eagles haven't shied away from the fact that making state was the main goal. Rigg said heading into the race, the Eagles approached it like any other. "The whole philosophy was to go out there and do the same thing we have been doing week in and week out," Rigg said. "These are the same teams we have been going against each week. There was nothing different. They were up for it and were pretty calm, cool and collected." For more of this story, read Tuesday's Lebanon Reporter.
