Lebanon runners take on Monumental Marathon

The Indianapolis Monumental Marathon took place Saturday Nov. 2. The youngest runner to finish the full marathon (26.2 miles) was from Lebanon. Tommy Veerkamp, 16, a sophomore at Lebanon High School began running in sixth-grade and finished his first half marathon at age 12. Since that first race he has been looking forward to running in a full marathon. His opportunity came last weekend when he ran in the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon.

“I felt great after the race and I can’t wait to run my next race,” Veerkamp said. Veercamp was second in the 16-18 age division with a time of 3 hours 25 minutes.

Also running the IMM from Lebanon were Steve Collier recording a time of 4 hours 27 minutes, and Jason Wright who finished with a time of 5 hours and 2 minutes.

In the half-marathon, Lebanon was represented by Jennifer Conrad, Laurie Kiefer, Sharlet Hinson, Francis Newman, Jeannie Jackson, Emily Ruch, Ed Frampton, Kerry Wonders, Nicholas Dale, Frank Benkert, Gary Deng, Anna Busenburg and Lisa Deng.

Lebanon also had three entries in the 5k race, Mary Painter, who placed first in her division; David Carney; and Christy Frampton also completed the 5k.
