Stars baseball drop two games at Northview

The Western Boone baseball team kicked off the 2014 season Saturday playing two games at Northview High School.

The Stars dropped the two contests, losing 5-1 to North Vermillion and 16-3 to host Northview.

In game one, the Stars and North Vermillion were scoreless through the first three innings. In the fourth, a lead-off single and a dropped-third strike allowed two runners to reach with no outs.

Two batters later, North Vermillion's Robby Davis hit a 2-run single to make the score 2-0.

North Vermillion added a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to go up 5-0. Western Boone was hitless for the first 5 2/3 innings, but TJ Wilson singled with two outs in the sixth to end the no-hit bid.

The Stars started to put some offense together in the seventh. Nathanial Bye and Shon Bechtold led off the inning with singles, and Bye then scored on a single by Tyler Hale to make it 5-1.

Two batters later with runners on the corners, Hale got picked off first for the second out. JT Daugherty walked to keep the game alive, but Kyle Hysong struck out to end the game.

Bye was the tough luck loser in the game, pitching the first four innings and giving up three hits and two runs (one earned). He struck out 10. Hale pitched the final two innings.

Things went poorly from the beginning in the second game.

Northview took a 11-0 after the top of the third inning.

Western Boone had a chance in the bottom of the third to get back into the game. Clay Biesecker tripled with one out and scored on a wild pitch.

Zach McKenzie, Zach Prickett and Zach McMann drew three-straight walks to load the bases with one out, but a strike out and a ground out ended the threat.
