Stars bats stay hot in win over Bulldogs

Dover — After jumping to a 6-1 lead Monday evening, the Western Boone softball team saw Clinton Central seize momentum in their game.

But after the Bulldogs stranded the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position in the top of the sixth, the Stars reclaimed the momentum with a 5-run inning and won the contest 11-5.

“I am really happy with the way the girls responded after the inning we had in the top of the sixth,” Western Boone head coach Mike Vanderpool said. “We let down on defense and had a couple of errors. The way we are hitting the ball now is great. The girls are really hitting the ball hard and the last three or four games we are putting a lot of runs on the board.”

Western Boone took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Ashley Burns doubled home Lauren Wilson.

The Stars then pulled away in the third, scoring on an error, a 2-run single by Jenna Thomas and an RBI-fielders’ choice by Cassidy Shepherd to go up 5-0.

The key to the inning was the Stars’ ability to take the extra base. Throughout the game Western Boone put the pressure on the Clinton Central defense, forcing them into five errors.

“We are always going to be an aggressive base running team,” Vanderpool said. “I like making things happen and like forcing errors. We did that tonight against them.”

Clinton Central got on the board in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by Caitlyn Bradley, but the Stars got the run back in their half of the inning when Savannah Bealmear scored on an error.

But the Bulldogs continued to chip away. They scored two in the fourth to cut it to 6-3 and then inched even closer in the sixth.
