Stars blank Cougars to advance

The third time was not the charm for the North Putnam girls soccer team Monday afternoon in the sectional quarterfinal match-up against Western Boone. The Lady Stars got first-half goals from Alli Voils and Meg Kinslow and topped the Cougars for the third time this season 2-0. The win improved the Stars to 11-3-1 on the season, setting the school record for most wins in a season. "This is our third meeting with them and it is a little tougher when you get to know your opponent like that," Western Boone head coach Jen Foxworthy said. "I was very happy that we were able to come out and have a good showing, especially in the first half, and meet the challenge in front of us." Voils scored midway through the first half to make the score 1-0. Less than 10 minutes later, Kinslow's tally made it 2-0. Foxworthy said anytime you can get out in front early in the sectional it is important. "Anytime you can score first, especially in the first half, you really put the pressure on the other team," Foxworthy said. "That is always a nice way to start things off. I was really happy because on the first goal we had talked about trying to carry the ball until we got pressured and because of that, Rachel Ramey got off a really good pass to Alli Voils for the goal. The second it was another thing we have talked about — getting shots off quicker. I could tell Meg Kinslow really wanted to take another touch on it, but she took it first time and resulted in another goal." For more of this story, read Tuesday's Lebanon Reporter.
