Historic end for Zionsville golf team

While it may not have been the state championship they hoped for entering the weekend, the IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals were still extremely successful for the Zionsville girls golf team. Shooting a two-day total of 639 (322-317), the Eagles placed third overall — their best finish in school history. "It is the best we have finished in the state tournament and I could not be more proud of them," Zionsville head coach Jeff Anderson said. "We had a rough start of it Saturday morning, and the girls collected themselves and knew they had to turn it on for the back nine. And they showed up." Carmel won the state title with a state record two-day total of 604. Penn placed second with a total of 631. Anderson said all season long that he had a three-year plan for this team when they entered their sophomore years. It worked out pretty well. "It worked out really well," Anderson said. "Congratulations first off to Carmel, they played amazing golf and they were untouchable this weekend. Penn was the standard bearer all season and to finish behind those quality of programs — we are honored to do it. We will take that for sure." The Eagles started the tournament off with a 322 on Friday, good enough for third place. Zionsville was just two shots behind Penn and 18 behind Carmel. While 18 shots back may seem like a lot, Anderson said they believed they still had a good chance. For more of this story, read Tuesday's Lebanon Reporter.
