Southmont tops WeBo in Sugar Creek final

New Market — The Western Boone basketball team had a chance to complete a comeback and claim its second-straight Sugar Creek Classic title.

After trailing 52-44 with 1:54 to go, the Stars had cut the lead to one and got the ball back with 11.4 seconds remaining.

The Stars got the set-up they wanted, but an inside pass to an open Riggs Baxter was stolen by Southmont’s Devon Burton, who was fouled and made both free throws to ice the game.

“I don’t fault the guys’ effort tonight, I don’t fault their toughness,” Western Boone head coach Scott McClelland said. “We got down eight, we battled back; it was a game of runs. We showed some toughness and made some things happen. But ultimately, we missed too many shots close to the basket throughout the course of the game. It is hard.”

The game was tied at 36 entering the fourth quarter, and the teams traded the lead four times in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter.

But a 11-1 run by the Mounties pushed the lead to 50-42 with 2:20 to go.

After the two teams traded baskets, the Stars made one last rally.

C.J. McMann cut the lead to 52-46 with a driving lay-in and then hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 52-49 with 1:06 to go.

Burton scored on the other end to push the lead back up to five, but Western Boone got back within three on a basket by Riggs Baxter with 27.8 to go.

On the ensuing in-bounds play Southmont tried to throw it deep, but it was stolen by L.V. Bowden.

The Stars’ senior pushed the ball back up the court and found Baxter wide open underneath for a lay-in to cut the lead to one.

Southmont missed the front-end of a 1-and-1, and Western Boone rebounded and called timeout with 11.4 seconds left in the game.
