Millers pressure too much for Stars

Noblesville — The final non-conference game of the season didn’t go the way the Western Boone girls basketball team wanted it to Tuesday night at Noblesville.

The Millers held the Stars to 10 points in the first half and topped Western Boone 54-42.

“It was the same old, same old with us,” Western Boone head coach Rich Schelsky said. “They pressured us in the half-court and trapped us and we couldn’t handle it. They set the tone early. Emily (Harrison) got into some foul trouble in the first half and we struggled to score without her.”

Rachel Ramey led the Stars with nine points and Harrison had eight.

Schelsky said it was good to face a team like Noblesville as they head into the final weeks of the regular season.

“Tonight was a good test for us,” Schelsky said. “We needed to try and handle that type of pressure again. The type of athletes that Noblesville has makes their press tough. For us to win what we want to win, we have to be able to handle the pressure. Tonight, we didn’t handle it.”

Noblesville led 13-5 after a quarter and 27-10 at the half. The Stars out-scored the Millers 32-27 in the second half, but it was too little, too late.

Schelsky said he didn’t have an exact number but figured the Stars committed around 30 turnovers. He said it is something they will continue to work on in practice.
