Mavunga, Bulldogs ruin Tigers’ senior night

Lebanon — The Class 3A No. 1 Lebanon Lady Tigers knew they were going to have their hands full with North Carolina recruit Stephanie Mavunga and her Class 4A No. 12 Brownsburg Bulldogs.

The Tigers made things as hard as they could on Mavunga, but the senior finished with 32 points and 21 rebounds and Brownsburg closed the game on an 8-0 run in the final 2:58 to win 55-52.

“My kids are all of 5-10 and they are going to battle like they are 6-foot and I thought they did that,” Lebanon head coach Beth DeVinney said. “I thought we did a better job in the second half against Stephanie, but she is just an incredible player. We put two kids on her and just like every time I have seen her, she rose to the occasion. We tried everything we could tonight to hold her down and try and stop her, but she is just tremendous. I am proud of my kids. We gave them all they wanted and then some, we just came up a little short.”

Lebanon took a 52-47 lead with 2:58 left in the game on a basket by Kristen Spolyar, but didn’t score the rest of the game, going 0-of-2 on free throws, 0-of-1 from the field and turning it over three times.

Mavunga scored with 2:07 left to cut the lead to 52-49 and after a Lebanon turnover, Aliyah Walker scored on a putback to cut the lead to 52-51.

Lebanon turned it over again with 50 seconds left.

The Bulldogs nearly turned it over themselves, but saved the ball on the baseline and eventually got the ball in the hands of Kayle Comer on the left wing.
