Stars just miss regional title

The Western Boone volleyball season came down to a race to four points. Unfortunately for the Stars, the Brebeuf Jesuit Braves were able to dig a little deeper and scored the final four four points to win the decisive fifth set 15-11 and the regional 3-2 (25-22, 20-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-11). "I am so proud of my girls," Western Boone head coach Laura Lawson said. "The biggest thing we have struggled with all through the year is staying mentally tough and competing; that is what we did tonight. I am so proud of all the girls, especially the seniors." The fifth set, like the rest of the match, was back-and-forth between the two teams. There were eight ties in the set, the last coming at 11. Western Boone appeared to have a 12-11 lead when the referees originally called Brebeuf for a net violation, but changed the call, forcing the point to be replayed. The Braves won a long rally on the next point to go up 12-11 and then added the final three points to win the match. Lawson said she didn't think the call hurt her girls. "I don't think it affected us," Lawson said. "I just think Brebeuf played a couple of really good points right after that. We just weren't able to finish it at the end." The Braves took game one after jumping out to a 14-9 lead. At that point, Lawson called a timeout to allow the Stars to regroup. Western Boone clawed back into the set, getting within one at 23-22, but ultimately lost. Still, the comeback in the set helped the Stars the remainder of the match.
