Wood represents USA in Golf World Cup

Zionsville’s Adam Wood showcased his golf skills on the world stage last week when he represented the United States in the Toyota Junior Golf World Cup June 18-21.

The event was held at the Chukyo Golf Club, Ishino Course, in Aichi, Japan.

The event featured 12 national teams of four players.

Wood placed in a tie for ninth individually (nine shots off the lead) and helped the United States to a sixth place finish.

“It was an incredible experience,” Wood said. “Whenever you get a chance to put the United States flag on your shirt and represent your country it is great. Playing against some of the best (junior) players in the world, was really neat. It was my first time out of the States and overall was just a great experience.”

Joining Wood on the American team were Cameron Champ (Sacramento, Calif.), Scott Scheffler (Dallas) and Ben Balter (Wellesley, Mass.).

Wood said that he knew Champ and Scheffler from the national tour, but didn’t know Balter until rooming with him last week.

Wood said the two hit it off so well that they will be playing a practice round together before a tournament this weekend.

Wood said that the format made it some what similar to high school.

“Between high school and what college is going to be like — it is similar,” Wood said. “You have teams of four or five and then you can drop one score. It is different than most of the summer tournaments where it is individual. But here, when you are posting a score, you aren’t worried about yourself, the team is the first priority.”
