Lebanon — Another accolade came in for the Lebanon baseball program on Tuesday.
Head coach Rick Cosgray was named District K Coach of the Year by the Indiana Baseball Coaches Association.
“It is a great honor,” Cosgray said. “Especially since our district has a lot of Hoosier Crossroads Conference, Sagamore Conference and other really respected programs in it. It is honored to be recognized from that group.”
District K includes the seven non Lafayette-HCC schools, all eight Sagamore Conference schools, Carmel and a few smaller area schools.
Cosgray said he has respect for all the programs in the district and it is nice to see the feelings reciprocated.
“It goes back to knowing how hard and how much time all the opposing coaches put into their preparation and their programs,” Cosgray said. “There is a mutual respect when you see that effort going into the programs. You see coaches building feeder systems and then building up the players once they get to the program and that is where the mutual respect comes in. It is nice to see our program get recognized and see it is respected.”
Cosgray led the Tigers to a 25-4 record, the school’s first conference title since 2005 and the school’s first sectional title since 2000.
The Tigers saw their season end with a loss to New Palestine in the regional.
“Now that we have had a chance to look back at it, we really had an outstanding group,” Cosgray said. “We had seven great seniors and a great group of of underclassmen too. They really came together as a group, worked well together and accepted their roles. That is really the big thing, everyone knew they had a role to play and that was the key to our success.”
Heading into the regional, the Tigers had won 18-straight games.
