Stars slip and slide to victory

Dover — The Western Boone football team hadn’t beaten Southmont since 2007.

And while it wasn’t the prettiest affair Friday night in the pouring rain, but the Stars finally topped the Mounties 12-0 to improve to 7-1 on the season.

“More than just getting the monkey off our back, we just wanted to beat a good football team and a good football program,” Western Boone head coach Jed Richman said. “(Southmont head coach) Desson (Hannum) has built a good program. They have gotten the better of us just by a little bit the last couple of years and they are the three-time defending champions. We wanted this one and were motivated because they got the better of us the last couple of years. We are going to enjoy this one. It wasn’t always the most fun, but we are going to enjoy it and get ready for Lebanon next week.”

Neither team could get much going the entire first half.

Southmont had a solid opening drive, highlighted by a 29-yard run by Devon Burton, but stalled inside the Stars’ 20.

Western Boone — which only managed 44 yards in the first 24 minutes — had only two first downs, both coming on the final drive of the half.

Starting from the Southmont 32, C.J. McMann found Riggs Baxter for a 24-yard catch inside the Southmont 10. After a sack and a completion to Austin Burtner, the Stars found themselves at the Mountie 2. But a fumble snap resulted in a turnover and the game was scoreless at the half.

Neither team did anything on their opening drive of the second half, and after forcing another Southmont three-and-out, Western Boone started to piece things together.

The Stars went 56 yards in seven plays to get down to the Southmont 4. But after a false start penalty, McMann was sacked and the drive stalled with an incompletion on fourth-and-goal.
