Lopez out-duels Squibb as Hot Dogs top Stars

Dover — Frankfort’s Leo Lopez and Western Boone’s Tyler Squibb had a good, old-fashioned pitcher’s duel Tuesday night in the two teams Sagamore Conference match-up.

In the end, it was Lopez and the Hot Dogs who were just slightly better than the Stars in a 1-0 victory.

“It was a really good ballgame,” Western Boone head coach Dave Sloan said. “Neither team really made any mistakes. They just got a timely hit with a runner in scoring position and get the run. We made some great plays on defense, so did they, and it was just a good ball game.”

Lopez held the Stars to just two hits in the game — a two-out single by Tyler Hale in the second and a lead-off single by Nathanial Bye in the seventh. He allowed only one other base runner (hitting Zach McMann with one-out in the third) and didn’t allow a runner to get to second base.

He struck out 10.

“He changed up speeds very well,” Sloan said. “He moved the ball around. He was probably the best pitcher we have seen all year. He just moved the ball around and changed his speeds.”

Squibb was almost as good. He allowed just four hits — all singles — and walked just one.

Sloan said he — like Lopez — did a good job of keeping the opponent off balance.
