Britt sends Tigers home victorious

Lebanon — The third time was the charm for Lebanon’s Lexy Britt and her Tiger teammates.

The Tigers’ junior catcher came up with a chance to deliver a walk-off hit late in the game for Lebanon three times, and on the third time delivered a looping single up the middle to plate Ashlyn Montgomery and give Lebanon a 2-1 win in 11 innings.

“I couldn’t ask for a better batter at the plate because she is so smart,” Lebanon head coach Steve Smith said. “She doesn’t strike out often, so she most likely would put the ball in play. I couldn’t have diagnosed it any better for her to come up with runners in scoring position. Had we gotten our bunts down a couple of times it may have been easier, but we didn’t and she came through.”

Lebanon had a chance to break through in the first inning — loading the bases — but failed to convert with the game’s first run.

That was the only serious scoring threat for either team until the sixth inning.

Cathedral’s Valerie Moore reached second on a throwing error to lead off the inning. After being sacrificed to third, Moore scored on a squeeze bunt from Kylie Hagarty to make it 1-0 for the Irish.

The Tigers tied the game back up the bottom of the inning.

Britt led off the inning with a double and after Madelyn Smith advanced courtesy runner Aspen Davis to third with a ground out, Kendall McCollum doubled in Davis to tie the game.

Coach Smith said that the Tigers’ have a lot of depth in the lineup so they feel confident in any part of the order coming up.

“I think it speaks of our team,” Smith said. “We had some girls with hot bats for a long time. Then they cooled down and got in a slump and someone picked them up. I’m pleased with that. When things aren’t quite going our way, we still find a way to win.”
