Cathedral too strong for Zionsville

Indianapolis — The Zionsville boys lacrosse team knew they had a tough challenge when they travel to face Cathedral Friday night.

And while they fought until the literal last second, the Eagles couldn’t top the host Irish, falling 9-5.

“Hats off to Cathedral, they are a very good team,” Zionsville head coach Matt Garvey said. “They are tough and they have really good players out there. We didn’t help ourselves out, we turned it over a lot; just threw it away.”

The Eagles were the first team from Indiana to hold Cathedral to under 10 goals in a game this season.

“Defensively, I think we played pretty well,” Garvey said. “There was a couple blown assignments and you will have that every once in a while. Our goalie, Ryan Spoonmoore really kept us in the game. We just have to get more consistent effort from our offense.”

Things didn’t start well for the Eagles, as they gave up a goal eight seconds into the game to trail 1-0. Cameron Bender tied the game with 6:34 left in the first quarter, but Cathedral scored two goals in 80 seconds to take a 3-1 lead.

Zionsville got some momentum late in the first quarter when Luke Whitaker scored with 8.7 seconds left in the first quarter, but it couldn’t carry over to the second period as there was only one goal scored the entire 12 minutes — by the Irish with 6:35 left in the half.

The second half started nearly as poorly as the first for the Eagles, as they surrendered a goal 1:13 into the third period.
