Stars softball gets crucial Sagamore Conference win over Southmont

The Western Boone softball team knew the importance of Thursday's Sagamore Conference game against Southmont.

With three losses in the conference already, including a 6-1 loss to the Mounties on Tuesday, Western Boone didn't want to drop another conference game.

The Stars' bats came through when they needed to, waking up late to top Southmont 8-2.

"We hit the ball a lot better," Western Boone head coach Mike Vanderpool said when asked the difference in the two games against Southmont. "We laid off (Southmont pitcher McKenzi Jordan's) riseball. We chased that pitch on Tuesday and she had 10 strikeouts. We were more patient today and we know that she can get flustered on the mound sometimes and I think that happened."

Vanderpool said that it was good to see the team's bats come to life against a good pitcher.

"We have been saying all year that we are a better hitting team than we have showed," Vanderpool said. "To hit the ball like we did today against a good team was really big for us."

Trailing 2-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth, the Stars bats came to life.

Paige Poole led off the inning by reaching on an error. After a strike out, Casey Clanton walked and both runners moved up on a ground out by Cassidy Shephered.

Jenna Thomas came through with a 2-out, 2-run double to tie the game.
