Eagles place second, Tigers fifth at Saturday's 8-team Ulen Invite

A strong 8-team field came to Lebanon of Saturday to participate in the Ulen Invitational.

The fourth-ranked Zionsville Eagles placed second with a 315 on the day. Lebanon placed fifth with a 321.

Third-ranked Westfield was the winner with a 300.

"I thought we played really well in our first nine," Zionsville head coach Steve Simmons said. "Shooting 149 on the front was very good in these conditions. I thought we would even do better on our second nine, but we got off to a tough start on those holes and from there we kind of limped around on our backside. I wouldn't say I'm displeased, I am certainly happy we placed second in this field. And I'm not sure we could have shot a 300 to beat Westfield today, but we were shooting for a 305-308. I thought we gave away too many shots."

It was the second-straight week that the Eagles had an extremely strong first nine, only to see the back nine not go as well.

Simmons said that is something the Eagles will work on.

"I think we are going to do some things in practice to put more emphasis on the back nine with our qualifying," Simmons said. "I'm not sure how we are going to do that yet; I have to think about that. But we have to put some more pressure on these guys. For some of these guys, this is their first varsity experience. Clay Hypes has played two excellent front nines in a row, but he is just now figuring out how good he can be. I think we will continue to get better as the year goes on."

For Lebanon, it was a slight step backward from what they shot at Ulen earlier in the week.

While the windy conditions didn't help, head coach Jeff Schroeder said something else hurt the Tigers on Saturday.
