Tigers 4-peat as sectional champs

Crawfordsville — It was a different year and different roster, but it was the same result for the Lebanon Tigers softball team — a sectional championship.

The Tigers shut out North Putnam 6-0 Friday night to claim the team’s fourth-consecutive sectional championship.

“We were talking on the bus that this team may not be the most talented on paper that we have had, but they have really come together as a group,” Lebanon head coach Steve Smith said. “They have had to face so much more adversity with the weather and double headers. I am really proud of them. This is huge for them, it is a great accomplishment and we are ready to keep it rolling.”

The Tigers lost three starters from the first three sectional championship teams, including their No. 3 and No. 4 hitters.

Despite those losses, Smith said there was never a doubt this year’s team could keep the streak alive.

“It isn’t a surprise to us,” Smith said. “I thought from the beginning that we were going to have a pretty good team. The key was moving girls around so we had six spots with new girls in them. That was a little bit of a concern, but the girls have gotten better as the year went on. You are never going to replace those three girls, but we had a lot of other girls step up their games. To some people, this may be surprising, but not to us.”

Lebanon jumped out a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
