Tigers headed back to semi-state

Fortville — The Lebanon Tigers softball team is headed back to the semistate.

The Tigers overcame a two-run deficit to top Mount Vernon 7-4 and advance to the final eight.

“It feels really good,” Lebanon head coach Steve Smith said. “Mount Vernon is a really good team. They have a good pitcher and it was a back-and-forth game. We were able to get a couple insurance runs in the seventh and hang on. It is a real good feeling.”

Mount Vernon struck first in the bottom of the second inning, scoring an unearned run on an RBI-ground out by Sadie Baugh.

The Tigers came right back in the top of the third.

Whitney Cosgray was the first Tiger to reach base in the game with a single down the left-field line. Ashlyn Montgomery hit a double to put runners on second and third for Carly Greene, who slapped a single to right field to drive in both runners and give the Tigers  a 2-1 lead.

Cosgray was a spark plug for the Tigers all game long, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI.

“She started the rallies and got things going,” Smith said.  “She got the first hit in the game with two outs and we scored. And she drove in a big run too. She has done a great job in the nine-spot and has really come through for us. Today was a good day for her.”

Mount Vernon capitalized on some Tiger miscues to reclaim the lead in the fourth.
