Western Boone swimming edged in opener

Tigersharks win big against Huskies

Dover — The Western Boone girls swimming and diving team was defeated by the slimmest of margins in its season opener Thursday, losing to Fountain Central 92-91.

First-year head coach Jennifer Jones liked the effort of her team.

“I think they did pretty good,” Jones said. “I think we have some things to work on, but overall it was pretty good.”

Western Boone had four wins on the day.

Madison Riegel and Emma Schaefer each led the way with two wins.

Riegel won the 50-yard freestyle in 26.70 and Schaefer won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:27.49.

The two teamed with Shelby Rohn and Morgan Ragsdale to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:58.81.

The final winner was Jobie Joslin in diving. She scored 113.90 for her six dives.

Jones also singled out the performance of sophomore Hayley Eadie, who placed second in four events.

“Hayley Eadie really came through in her events and really swam well,” Jones said.

For the only time this season, the meet was a girls-only meet.

The boys will start their season Tuesday at North Montgomery.

“(The meet goes) faster, however I think it is kind of nice,” Jones said. “Because the girls can just focus on their swimming and I can just focus on them without as many heats.”

One thing that Jones wants the girls to improve on is competing in close races.

In positions separated by less than a second, WeBo lost six of the eight spots.

“We lost a lot of close races and that, I think, was our downfall,” Jones said. “We need to work on our finishes and turns. Once we get those down we will be really good.”

Jones said it was a good reminder that every spot in a race counts.

“Every point counts,” Jones said. “When it comes down to those close races, we ended up losing by one point. If we pulled out even a couple more fifth places instead of sixth places, the results would be different.”
