Squibb’s double gives Stars win

Dover — As the weather has heated up and gotten better the last week, so has the Western Boone baseball team.

The Stars got their fourth-straight win Tuesday with a 4-3 victory against Tri-West.

“The kids have really stepped up,” Western Boone head coach Dave Sloan said. “All year long they have been working to be more consistent and today they got close to playing a complete seven-inning game. We still made some mistakes that we have to clean up a little bit, but it is a big win.”

The Stars took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

CJ McMann was hit with a pitch with one out, and Nathanial Bye doubled to put runners on second and third.

LV Bowden followed with an RBI-ground out to make it 1-0.

Tri-West tied the game in the second inning, but the Stars responded right away to regain the lead.

Logan Wethington walked with one out, and Cameron Cline bunted to sacrifice him to second, but an error on the throw to first allowed Wethington score and Cline to be safe at second.

Wilson hit an infield single, and after Cline was caught stealing home, McMann doubled home Wilson.

Cline was ejected on his caught stealing for barreling over the Tri-West player covering home. Coupled with an injury that Clay Biesecker suffered Monday put the Stars down two regulars.

Sloan said that he was happy with the way his team handled the adversity.

“One of the things we have talked about all year is the ability to show our composure,” Sloan said. “We want to show our character and not get caught up in the circumstances that surround us. I am so proud of the kids for the way they have bought into that.”

Tri-West scored once in the third to get within one. They tied the game in the fifth when a two-out infield pop-up was dropped to allow the tying run to score.
