Stars hammer Mounties to win conference opener

The Western Boone volleyball team had no problems in their conference opener against Southmont Thursday night. The Stars easily topped the Mounties 25-17, 25-13, 25-11. "I think our serving was really good," Western Boone head coach Laura Lawson said. "The first set we had three or four missed serves. I harped on them before the second game that we couldn't have that — especially in their first three serves. Those need to be consistently in and then we can push the pace. I think we got them out of their serve receive, got them out of system and got free balls and that is to our advantage because we probably have the best offense in the conference." Western Boone jumped out to a big lead in the first set, but Southmont was to make a small run to get within 23-17. But the Stars won the next two points to win the set. The remaining two sets were close early, but the Mounties had no answers for the Western Boone attack. "I think in the first set we just didn't finish as well," Lawson said. "It was 21-10, so it could have been the same as the second and third sets. We just didn't finish in the first set. That is what we really talked about after the first set, we wanted to start strong and we wanted to finish strong. That has been a little bit of a weakness for us." In each of the sets, Western Boone had long serving runs of at least seven points. Lawson said that was something the Stars had been working on in practice. She also said it was good to get the conference opener out of the way early. "We did a drill yesterday where we worked on getting side outs and serving runs," Lawson said . I am glad that was able to carry over in the game. It is good and bad to play a conference game so soon. I was nervous all day for the match. Southmont is a good team and it is tough to play them first." For more of this story, read Friday's Lebanon Reporter.
