Tigers end Zionsville's sectional reign

Lebanon — Despite losing 5-0 to Zionsville earlier in the year, the Lebanon Tigers tennis team knew they could hang with the Eagles and the match was much closer than the final score.

They made sure everyone else knew it Friday. The Tigers topped Zionsville 4-1 in the Lebanon Sectional semifinals, ending Zionsville’s seven year sectional title reign.

“We haven’t beaten Zionsville since 2003,” Lebanon head coach Brad Mustin said. “Our guys knew they had a fighting chance after we lost to them in the regular season. It led to a whole new mentality of the season leading to this match.”

In the match earlier in the season, Lebanon won the first set in three of the matches – No. 3 singles and both doubles matches.

Surprisingly, it was the other two spots that Lebanon won the easiest. Josh Wright put Lebanon up 1-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Josh Axelson at No. 1 singles and Sam Godby made in 2-0 with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win against Carson Skelly at No. 2 singles.

“Josh Wright is an excellent tennis player and Sam Godby is an extreme athlete,” Mustin said. “They have been in these situations before. They don’t have many nerves and know how to control themselves and step up at the right moment.”

The clincher for the Tigers came at No. 2 doubles.
