Stars shine brightest in SAC

Dover — After finishing in a three-way tie for the Sagamore Conference title last season, the Western Boone Stars were looking to clinch an outright title Tuesday night when they hosted rival Lebanon in the Sagamore Conference finale.

The Stars did just that, topping the Tigers 25-10, 25-21, 25-18 to improve to 26-3 and 7-0 in the Sagamore Conference.

“I think the last time that Western Boone won an undisputed conference title was when I was a junior,” Western Boone head coach Laura Lawson said. “So it is kind of cool that I was a junior and our strong class this year is our juniors. It felt great, the whole conference run we only lost one set. To do that is really good.”

With six out of the seven teams in the sectional in the Sagamore Conference, Lawson said it is both a positive and a negative to finish the conference season unbeaten.

“I think it gives us a lot of confidence, but we can’t overlook anyone,” Lawson said. “Everybody has us on their radar and we are the big target. We have to make sure we take every match seriously.”

Western Boone jumped out in game one, cruising to the 25-10 victory.

Lebanon head coach Rob Zajdel said that the Tigers struggled with serve receive in the first game.

“That was the biggest thing, but I think we had a little bit of jitters too,” Zajdel said. “When we had good serve receive and had good passes we weren’t executing our offense and that really is disappointing. When we had opportunities we weren’t focused in game one. We regrouped and put it together in games two and three, we were just fell a little short.”

Game two was much closer from the beginning.
