Merchants hold off Bandits in 9-7 win

Lebanon — The Lebanon Merchants have been hard at it all summer long, often playing five games a week.

But even with the schedule lightening up for the next couple of weeks, they are still showing they are the top team in the Midwest Prospects Baseball League. The Merchants topped the Indy Bandits 9-7 Wednesday night to improve to 14-3 on the season.

“This team is in our league, but it doesn’t count in our conference schedule,” Lebanon manager Ron Ebert said. “It was just a game to keep us sharp. We have been playing a lot of back-to-back weekend doubleheaders, so we have a nice break now.”

The Merchants only play three games between June 24 and July 10, a nice break after playing 16 games in the first three weeks of June.

Ebert said that it is important to keep the players fresh — especially since most came directly from their college teams.

“These college guys like to have their vacations,” Ebert joked. “You have to give them a little time off. It is intense during the season. They like to play and all that, but they need a break too. This gives us a chance to keep the guys sharp and when we come back they are ready to go.”

After the Bandits hit a homer in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead, the Merchants grabbed control in the bottom half of the inning.

Colton Stephenson drew a lead-off walk and advanced to third on a double by Michael Spolyar.
