Lebanon’s Schaller performs in premier national showcase

Lebanon High School’s Reid Schaller showed last week why he has the chance to be one of the top baseball prospects in the Class of 2016.

Schaller was one of just three rising sophomores, and one of 115 total, to compete in the 2013 Perfect Game Junior National Showcase in Minneapolis on June 11 and 12.

The showcase, held in the Metrodome, was attended by hundreds of college recruiters and professional scouts.

The showcase was used as a scouting evaluation and provided an opportunity to play against some of the other top prospects in the nation.

Perfect Game is baseball’s foremost scouting report service and holds numerous showcases, tournaments, online videos, national ranking, player profiles and scouting reports.

Players that have played in the Junior National Showcase include the Nationals’ Bryce Harper, the Rockies’ Nolan Arenado and the Orioles’ Dylan Bundy.

In 2012, 29 of the 31 first round picks in the MLB Draft had participated in a Perfect Game event.

Schaller — who posted a 2-1 record for Lebanon this season with a 3.50 ERA (second on team), 38 strikeouts (second) and a 1.37 WHIP (team best) in 30 innings — was one of just two players from Indiana to be invited to the Showcase (the other being Zionsville senior to be Grant Sloan).

Schaller threw as hard as 89 in the two innings he pitched in the scrimmage, averaging between 85-88 on his fastball (with most being close to 88).

His curveball was reported to have 11/5 break at between 74-76 MPH and a change up at 74 MPH.

He had three strikeouts in his two innings of work.
