Stars’ offense goes stagnant in loss to Mount Vernon

Indianapolis — The Western Boone Lady Stars basketball team had every opportunity to get a quality win Thursday afternoon against Mount Vernon (Fortville).

But Western Boone struggled on the offensive side of the court and ultimately fell 55-41 at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse.

“It was an absolute clunker on offense,” Western Boone head coach Rich Schelsky said. “From the turnovers, to the missed shots, to the lack of aggressiveness we showed on offense, until we learn that, anybody will be able to play with us. We don’t do anything offensively to impose our will on anybody.”

Despite not shooting well, the first quarter ended up being a positive for the Stars.

Although they trailed 10-8, they got Mount Vernon center Erika Moore (who had eight points in the first quarter and 17 in the game) in foul trouble and forced her out for the rest of the half.

But with the Marauders best player on the bench, Western Boone couldn’t capitalize.

Mount Vernon started the quarter on a 9-1 run to take a 19-9 lead with 5:09 left in the half.

“If anybody sat by the bench all they heard me scream in the second quarter was to take the ball to the basket,” Schelsky said. “It really didn’t matter if Moore was in our not, if you saw the last four or five minutes of the game, Taylor (Vanderpool) took the ball to the basket, and so did Kaitlin (Miller) and Emily (Harrison). They didn’t even get in our way, we got right to the rim. We just didn’t figure that out until it was too late. That was a tough second quarter for us. To have us be out-scored with their best player off the court was crucial.”
