Tigers gut out win against Mounties

New Market — The Lebanon softball team didn’t hit the ball as well as they wanted to Monday night in a Sagamore Conference match-up with Southmont.

But in the end, the three runs they scored were more than enough. Lebanon’s Ashlyn Montgomery and the defense behind held Southmont at bay and topped the Mounties 3-0.

“Two out of the three facets of our game I was satisfied with,” Lebanon head coach Steve Smith said. “I was pleased with our pitching — Ashlyn missed a couple of spots but no big deal — and I was satisfied with our defense. We just didn’t go to the plate with the same mentality we have been the last couple of games. The longer (Southmont pitcher McKenzi Jordan) goes, the better she gets. We just need to change our focus a little bit.”

The Tigers have had numerous games this season in which it has taken their offense a while to get going.

Smith said the Tigers are still adapting late in the season.

“Last year we got to the point in the season where they weren’t thinking about anything but the team,” he said. “We were good at situational hitting — if we had a runner on third, we hit it to the right side and we would think about what was best for us and gave us an opportunity to win. We have some youth on this team, we have some girls playing different positions and we have some girls that are being called upon for the first time even if they have been in the program a couple of years. I just don’t think we have that mental toughness yet, so we do go up and down. It is good when we are a little lethargic that we can still go out and do enough to win.”
