Zionsville end Lebanon’s tennis season in sectional semis

Lebanon — The Zionsville girls tennis team hurdled its biggest obstacle to its 13th-straight sectional title Thursday night.

The Eagles topped Lebanon 5-0 and will face Frankfort for the sectional title today.

“It was nice to play Lebanon first this year because the last two years we have played them in the championship,” Zionsville head coach Matt Moore said. “When we look at the sectional, Lebanon is always the pin-point match for us that we want to make sure we bring our best performance too. It was a good opening round for us and I think we played well at all five positions.”

At No. 1 singles Candice Park defeated Sarah Curts 6-0, 6-1. At No. 2 singles Lauren Ward defeated Jenna Dickerson 6-1, 6-1 and at No. 3 singles Natasha Wujek defeated Shelby Dejka 6-3, 6-0.

In doubles play, the No. 1 doubles team of Kelly Mattingly and Erin Cordill defeated Kaitlin Heick and Allyson Davis 6-1, 6-2 and at No. 2 doubles Allison Gruninger and Sophia Metzger defeated Allie Ball and Megan Stuteville 6-1, 6-2.

Lebanon head coach Lisa Erwin said the matches were closer than the scores indicated.

“I think they were in every point pretty much,” Erwin said. “Sometimes the score doesn’t reflect how close it was — especially in Sarah’s match. I am proud of the way they presented themselves on the court and that is more important to me.”
