Stars overwhelm Eagles to stay unbeaten

---- — The Western Boone girls basketball team had been waiting for senior guard BayLee Mitchell to bust out of her shooting slump.

She came through Tuesday night. Mitchell had a game-high 17 points and hit three 3-pointers as Western Boone topped county foe Zionsville 62-34.

"We have been waiting on that," Western Boone head coach Rich Schelsky said. "BayLee by anyone's account had struggled a little bit shooting so far. We know what kind of shooter she is and what she is capable of. For her to get on track is a great thing because we feel like we have a pretty good interior game and we have kids willing to shoot the ball on the perimeter. Once we get her going, we are going to pretty hard to defend we think."

Mitchell's biggest stretch came late in the third quarter.

Western Boone had led by 19 at the half and pushed it to 20 with a free throw by Emily Harrison early in the third quarter.

But the Stars struggled from the field in the third quarter, not hitting a shot for the first 6:05. That allowed the Eagles to get within 15. Mitchell ended the drought with a 3-pointer from the top of the key and then added a lay-up off a set play to push the lead back to 20.

"That was huge," Schelsky said. "She hit a huge 3 Friday against Tri-West right at the end of the half. Once kids get confidence shooting the basketball, it becomes contagious. And I think she is in that phase where she is a lot more confident shooting the ball and hitting the big shots. That was a big shot. You have to give Zionsville credit. They are scrappy and (head coach) Andy (Maguire) does a great job, this is a very improved basketball program. They weren't going to go away, they were right there with us and that was a big shot BayLee hit."

The Eagles continue to try and claw their way back into the game, getting back to within 15 with 4:35 to play, but Western Boone ended the game on a 15-2 run.
