Mounties stun Stars with late-inning rally

Linden — For 5 1/2 innings Thursday night, the Western Boone Stars were well on their way to making it to the sectional semifinals.

Then things fell apart in the bottom of the sixth. Southmont scored five times in the bottom of the sixth, and held on to beat Western Boone 8-7.

“I’m not really sure what happened,” Western Boone head coach Dave Sloan said. “I’m not sure if it got cold, if we lost focus, or whatever the case might be. We just made some critical mistakes that we paid for. But to me, the biggest problem was leaving the bases loaded twice in the first three innings.”

Western Boone led 7-3 heading into the decisive inning.

Derek White led off the inning with a walk and Austin Frederick followed with a single.

After a strike out, Seth Adams hit an infield single, and the throw to first went high and all the way to the fence, allowing two runs to score.

After an RBI-single by Mitch Dehne made it 7-6, Aaron Cox reached on an error and ended starter Tyler Squibb’s night.

Devin Miller hit an infield single to load the bases for Logan Stewart, who reached on yet another error that allowed the tying and go-ahead runs to score.

“It did surprise me a bit,” Sloan said of the errors. “All three of those guys usually make those plays nine times out of 10. Don’t know why it happened tonight, but unfortunately we were playing a team that capitalized on them.”

Now finding themselves down for the first time all game with just three outs remaining, Western Boone saw its first two batters of the top of the seventh retired before TJ Wilson was hit by a pitch.
