Strong infield looks to push Western Boone to next step

Dover —  The past three seasons, the Western Boone softball team has advanced to the sectional championship, only to lose to rival Lebanon.

This year, with virtually every key component back, the Stars are ready to take that step to dethrone the Tigers and claim their first sectional title since 2006.

“It has been good,” first-year head coach Mike Vanderpool said of practice so far. “We were able to get outside for the first time Monday and the girls are looking good so far.”

The weather has been an issue for all teams in Central Indiana this spring.

That is something that has altered the way the Stars have practiced.

“We have been doing a lot of infield,” Vanderpool said. “The key is to just try and get outside. It is a whole different game when you get out there. Inside we look great throwing the ball, outside is different. Hopefully the weather breaks and we can get outside to practice.”

The infield is going to be the biggest strength for the Stars this season.

Savannah Bealmear, Lydia Climer, Kelci Johnson and Hannah Williams all return from a season ago, and the Stars add a quality freshman in Taylor Vanderpool to the mix this year.

“I think our hitting will  be strong, but one of our main strengths is our defense,” coach Vanderpool said. “I believe that we have one of the best infields out there. I have heard that from some other coaches who know the players we have. We have some of the best infielders out there.”
