Buzzer beater hands WeBo girls first Sagamore loss

It wasn't a happy winter homecoming for the Western Boone Lady Stars Friday night.

Visiting Danville came into Stephen A. Wall Gymnasium and handed the Stars their first conference loss of the season, 58-56, on a buzzer-beating jumper from Maleha Motter.

The Stars are now tied in the loss column with Lebanon atop the Sagamore Conference.

"It didn't appear like our kids played to win; it looked like they played not to lose," Western Boone head coach Rich Schelsky said. "We have to give Danville a lot of credit — their kids are young, they're scrappy and they came in here knowing they had nothing to lose and everything to gain and they got it. You have to tip your cap to them, but the disappointing thing is we have a lot of kids out there that have played in a lot of big games, and we didn't handle the situation or the moment very well."

The Stars led by three at the end of a quarter, and by 11 at the half.

In the second half, the Warriors defense brought them back into the game. After Western Boone turned it over nine times in the first half, they turned it nine in the third quarter alone.

Still, the Stars led by 10 with 2:33 to go in the quarter before a 9-0 Danville run brought them within one at the end of three quarters.

Western Boone finished the game with 27 turnovers.

"We have to have the discipline to slow down," Schelsky said. "The press is doing exactly what it is supposed to do. It is speeding us up, taking us out of running offense and taking us out of coming down and pounding it down to Emily Harrison, who nobody can guard. We just have to find the discipline within ourselves to break it, stop, then run some offense."
